Distinguished and Famous people from Perth East
🎬 Heath Ledger
Heath Ledger’s Perth schooling included Mary’s Mount at Gooseberry Hill and Guildford Grammar, before he left to pursue acting. His international career included the demanding roles for which he became best known, with the Joker in The Dark Knight bringing a posthumous Academy Award. Guildford’s record preserves him among its former students, while the state’s tributes remembered a schoolmate and neighbour as well as a film star. The eastern suburbs belong to the early chapter, when performance was becoming an occupation rather than an international reputation. His death in 2008 cut that career short at twenty-eight.
📚 Katharine Susannah Prichard
Katharine Susannah Prichard made Greenmount her permanent home after marrying Hugo Throssell in 1919. There she continued a writing career that examined labour, class and Australian society, alongside sustained political activism. Her work included Working Bullocks and Coonardoo. The house later became the KSP Writers’ Centre, preserving her setting while giving other writers somewhere to work. That continuing use makes the local legacy unusually practical: a place where one author wrote became a place supporting many others. Her public convictions also made her a controversial figure, and remain part of understanding the books and their times.
